What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-surgical, minimally invasive injectable treatment that’s FDA-approved to permanently eliminate excess fat under your chin.
You can use Kybella even if you have a large amount of submental fat, commonly called a double chin, but you may need more than one treatment.
What causes a double chin?
Excess fat under your chin often develops as you gain weight, but many people end up with a double chin even when they haven’t put on extra pounds. Your genes contribute to the problem, sometimes leading to submental fat regardless of weight.
Aging also has an impact. As you get older, your skin naturally loses its tone and starts to sag, while the layer of fat under your skin begins to give in to the effect of gravity. As a result, you end up with a double chin.
How does Kybella work?
Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a substance that’s naturally found in your body. Deoxycholic acid helps your body break down dietary fats. When it’s injected into an area of fat, it does its normal job: It goes to work destroying fat cells.
After the injected fat cells break down, the waste is cleared away by your body. As a result, your double chin is permanently eliminated.
What should I expect during a Kybella procedure?
Before your treatment, your provider at Aesthetic Lab applies a topical anesthetic. After it takes effect, they inject multiple shots of Kybella. A typical session takes about 15-20 minutes, but it depends on the size of the area and the amount of fat being treated.
It’s normal to have some redness and swelling following your procedure. You may also develop a little bruising or areas of hardness. You won’t need to take downtime to recover, but the team recommends avoiding strenuous activities for a day after your injections.
When will I see results?
It takes a little time to see the full results because your fat cells slowly break down over several weeks. You may also need more than one treatment to achieve your desired profile, which means you’ll wait longer to see the results.
After the team at Aesthetic Lab evaluates your chin, they can determine the number of treatments you’ll need. You can receive up to six treatments spaced at least a month apart, but most people notice a visible reduction after 2-4 sessions.
